River School · Terms of Service

Last updated: [DATE OF LAUNCH] Version: 1.0

Welcome to River School. These terms describe the agreement between you and River School when you use our service. We've tried to write them in plain English. If anything is unclear, email us at hello@riverschool.example — we'll answer.

1. Who we are

River School is an AI-native homeschool curriculum service operated by [LEGAL ENTITY NAME] ("we," "us," "River School"). We help parents teach their children at home by providing lessons, practice, adaptive tutoring, and weekly digests that summarize what your child worked on.

2. Who can use River School

  • Parents and legal guardians age 18 or older may create an account and subscribe on behalf of their household.
  • Children use the service only through a child profile their parent or guardian has set up. Parents are responsible for deciding when their child is ready to use the service.
  • We design River School for learners ages 10 through 13. Younger children may also use it with parental supervision.

If you are under 18, please ask a parent or guardian to set up the account.

3. Your account

When you create an account:

  • You confirm you are a parent or legal guardian of any child using the service under your account.
  • You agree to give us accurate information (email, child's first name, grade level).
  • You are responsible for keeping your password safe and for anything done under your account.
  • If something goes wrong (someone uses your account without permission, for example), email us immediately.

4. How subscriptions work

  • River School is a paid subscription service. Pricing, terms, and included features are shown on the subscription page before you pay.
  • Payments are processed by Stripe. We don't store your credit card number on our servers.
  • Subscriptions renew automatically on the cadence you chose (monthly or annually). You can cancel anytime from your account settings; cancellation takes effect at the end of your current paid period.
  • If you cancel mid-period, you keep access until the end of the period. We do not prorate refunds for partial periods, except where required by law.
  • If we change pricing, we'll tell you by email before the change takes effect on your account.

5. What you can do with the service

You may:

  • Use River School for your own household's education.
  • Ask your child to complete lessons, practice, and tutoring sessions.
  • Read and share the weekly digests we generate for you about your child's week.

You may not:

  • Share your account with other households.
  • Scrape, copy, or republish lesson content for resale or mass distribution.
  • Use the service to train competing AI models or to extract our prompts, rubrics, or content structure.
  • Attempt to bypass child-profile protections, rate limits, or age-gating.
  • Use the service for anything illegal, harmful, or harassing.

6. What we make with AI, and what that means

River School uses AI (specifically, Anthropic's Claude models) to do three things:

  1. Grade open-ended responses — we send your child's written answer and the grading rubric for the question to Anthropic, which returns a score and a short rationale.
  2. Run tutor conversations — when your child is stuck, they can have a short back-and-forth conversation with a tutor scaffold. We send the relevant question, the sub-concept being practiced, and your child's responses to Anthropic.
  3. Write weekly digests — once a week, we summarize what your child worked on and send you a digest. Generating the digest involves sending a structured summary (subjects touched, concepts mastered, concepts still practicing, and optionally a short excerpt of your child's writing if you've allowed quoting) to Anthropic.

AI feedback is a tool, not a replacement for your judgment as a parent-teacher. If a grade seems wrong, if a tutor turn misreads your child, or if a digest misses the point — trust yourself, and let us know. We're improving these systems continuously.

More detail on exactly what is sent, when, and how long it's kept is in the Privacy Policy.

7. Content we provide

Lessons, practice items, tutor prompts, and rubrics are our property or properly licensed. You get permission to use them with your family while your subscription is active. You do not get permission to redistribute them.

Content your child produces (writing, drawings uploaded, etc.) belongs to you and your child. By using the service, you give us a limited license to store and process that content solely to run the service for you (grade, tutor, generate digests, and keep a record of your child's progress).

8. Things we can't promise

  • We can't promise your child will learn a specific thing by a specific date. Learning is variable; we do our best to meet each child where they are.
  • We can't promise the service will be free of bugs or downtime. We aim for reliability, but software sometimes fails.
  • We can't promise any specific academic outcome or test result.

To the maximum extent the law allows, River School and its suppliers disclaim implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement.

9. Limits on liability

If something goes wrong and we are legally responsible, the maximum amount we will owe you is the amount you paid us in the past 12 months. We are not liable for indirect damages (lost profits, loss of use, etc.).

Some jurisdictions don't allow these limits, in which case they apply to the maximum extent the law permits.

10. Ending the relationship

You can cancel anytime from your account settings. You can also request full account deletion by emailing privacy@riverschool.example — we'll confirm and remove your account within 30 days (see Privacy Policy for what we keep and for how long).

We may suspend or end your access if you break these terms, if your payment fails after reasonable attempts to collect, or if we're required to by law. If we end your subscription, we'll refund any unused paid period except where the reason for termination is misuse of the service.

11. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms as the product evolves. When we make material changes, we'll email you at the address on your account and post an updated version here with a new "Last updated" date. If you keep using the service after the effective date, that's your agreement to the new terms. If you don't agree, you can cancel.

12. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of [STATE], USA. Disputes will be resolved in the state and federal courts located in [COUNTY, STATE].
